Pitt Will send: Charlie Morton 19: 9M
Philli will send
1) Robbie Ray - SP - ARI - 2019: 500K 2) Matt Carpenter - 3B/1B - 2019: 10M 2020: 14M 3) 2nd round selection - 2021 minors draft
My reasoning is simple, retooling my short term guys for more control, buy low guys. Morton has been solid but is getting up there in age, I was probably not going to like the salary and term he would demand in FA. I was looking for a better return than the pick compensation I would have received.
I would like to welcome Ray back to my squad. he is a strikeout machine but can get blown up at times. he is a guy I should be able to play matchups with and is prospect tag eligible getting him at a low cost for 2 more years
Carpenter is another guy that looks like a nice buy low on. he is having a career bad year BABIP wise so should improve on his 212 Avg going into next year. My team really saw what happens when you dont have enough quality depth when injuries strike.
the draft pick is probably a better pick than I would have gotten if i let Morton go so the other guys seem like a bonus here.
I will need to release a player to fit the extra player on my squad so will do once the trade is approved.
Very quick chat with Chuck and I wish him luck.

Agreed. I like Robbie Ray also but I could not control him past this year and I was planning to use my prospect tag on Jorge Soler. So picking up Charlie Morton for the remainder of this year and maybe an additional couple of years was a win for my squad. Matt Carpenter will probably rebound to have a solid year in 2020 & giving the additional draft pick will another lottery ticket for Brodie's team. It was great talking trade with Brodie as usual. It was a quick negotiation. I hope this trade works out for both teams going forward. Good Luck Brodie!!!
