How was Merritt on a prospect contract? He hasn’t met league miniumums and I never started him. Not trying to be argumentative, just honestly curious so I know going forward.

Brandon, This was you transaction for Ryan Merritt:
12/15/16 Promote Ryan Merritt, SP (CLE) to 40-Man Roster ($0 salary for 2017) Promote Jordan Patterson, OF (COL) to 40-Man Roster ($0 salary for 2017)
-Once you promote a player to your major league roster the clock starts on his contract. He was on your roster all of the 2017 season at "0" dollars. His 2018-2021 contract would be 500K. You decided to release him during the season, so your cap penalty is 125K for 2018 only. If you decided to drop Ryan Merritt before the 2018 season had started, he would have "0" cap penalty. I hope that help you understand the process.

Correct. If Merritt was promoted Dec 2016 prior to the 2017 season, his contract for all of 2017 was $0. Then if you decided to keep him going into this season his contract would then have become 18-21: $0.5M. If he's now being dropped in season the cap hit is 25% for the remainder of this year. No cap hit moving forward.
