I have noticed a few times now from the Tampa Bay Rays that they open their games with a relief pitcher. Is this the start of a new trend in Baseball where relievers open the game for possibly the first 3 innings of games and have the starters finish with 6 strong innings of work. That could negate for the most part the saves & hold categories. An interesting philosophy. What does everyone think of this ?

It's similar to a philosophy that I truly believe will work. Have a pitcher throw three outs per game. The players union will be in an uproar over it but I think a team should spend the minimum on pitching and let them know that they only gotta get three hitters out. It sounds so easy.

I think you are on to something. There are teams in this league that are small market and can't afford to pay players "Big Bucks". They spend their money of their farm system. The Tampa Bay Rays, Oakland A's etc. This could be the next "Analytical" wave that hits the Big Leagues.

Yea man. Spend the money on offense. Pay like 12 pitchers the minimum. A major league pitcher should be able to get three outs. Especially when they know they don't have to do more than that. They can throw their all out for one inning then go to sleep.

I know the SanFran Giants won 3 World Series rings by having a great bullpen. The Phillies had the 4 Aces(Halladay, Lee, Hamels & Oswalt) in 2011 and could not win a title. That made me sick that year as I am a true 4 for 4 Philly fan!!!

I just read that the rays pitching staff has the lowest era in MLB since they started their pitching strategy.
