Jays trade: Starling Marte, OF PIT, 17: 3M
to Orioles for: Eric Thames, 1B/OF MIL, 17: 9M, 18: 9M Prospect Dominic Smith, 1B, NYM
Brodie approached me post-suspension inquiring about Marte and offering Thames. After some back and forth, we settled on Smith as the third piece. The deal is two-fold for me. I have tons of free agents at the end of the year and would not have been able to Franchise Marte, so adding an additional year of control for Thames was big. Secondly, with a bunch of free agents at the end of the year, I can't afford to waste 80 games without Marte. Thames can hopefully help fill that void (sans the stolen bases). Hopefully he can keep up this torrid pace.

To me this was a bit of a Buy low on Marte and a Sell High on Thames. Unlike Drew I do not have many free agents coming up (not ones I wanted to extend anyways) I am not looking to compete in 2017 so the loss of 80 games does not affect me like it would a contender. Thames is off to a horrid pace and hopefully Drew will continue to see that on his squad although I do see the league catching up to him later in the year or next year.
Ultimately I saw this as a buying opportunity. Getting a player like Marte at a discounted price was too much to pass on. I really like Dom Smith but I have the depth at CI to where he was somewhat expendable.
I really hope this deal works out for both parties.
