I just posted a thread about that today. You're responsible for 50% of the current season's salary. If it's a multi-year contract you could be responsible for up to 25% of the remaining contract years' salaries depending on if the player is resigned by another team and what they sign him for. Please see the section in the rules called Releasing Players.
