Just figured we could start a discussion thread on if we want to be allowed to drop minor leaguers while we draft to open up more spots, or to lock them before the draft.

I think that dropping of MiL players should be locked before the draft. Even if the deadline is 11:59pm the day before the draft starts. With our draft occurring in January, owners have plenty of time to come up with a draft strategy prior to our draft starting. As such, locking the MiL players helps ensure that the owners prepare wisely and do less "on-the-fly." Just my two cents.

Why would we lock this and still allow tradimg? It's a roster move and we don't suspend any other moves during the draft. Rosters change through trades during the draft so prepping is not fool-proof.
I am only speaking from my perspective, but I took over a terrible team and I had enough minors space to accommodate all of my picks. However, i.made some deals that brought in minors and now will be forced to make another trade or forfeit picks which ultimately does not allow me to manage my team how I see fit.
Whatever the masses want, but it's not consistent with any other roster management strategies.

I agree with Brandon. We set deadlines and there was plenty of time for drops to be done. We already extended the deadline once for the stragglers.

Normally I would have said that I agreed with both Brandon and Drew, but J brings up what I feel is a very valid point. Why lock that but keep trading open? I think that's a valid argument at the least.

I am up for discussing it for next year. This year, it is too late, as people have already made deals with deadlines in mind.

J does make a valid point, and I agree with Drew. I think this is worthy of a discussion prior to next year's draft, but rules (not just this one) shouldn't be changed on the fly.

I don't see why we would lock trading. It's up to everyone to plan accordingly and if that means freeing up extra spots so if you acquire more prospects then so be it. I dropped more players than I needed to but i had an issue one year so I learned my lesson and made sure that didn't happen again. I don't think punishing other teams that have planned is the solution.

It is a discussion that is better served for next year, but it is not about preparation or punishment. It just doesn't make sense for this to be the one roster move that cannot be done in real time. A 40 man player can be dropped now or a trade can take place or a promotion, but one needs to wait to drop a minor til the draft is over. People have made trades where they break the salary cap and then have a window to make corresponding move to get into cap compliance. I don't see why it is a big deal to drop a MiLB player before you draft one that you think might be better to take that spot in the 60 minors.
Rosters are fluid due to trades and how the draft goes so every owner should get to manage this aspect in real time rather than predetermining an amount of draft picks they want to use before the draft.

BTW - I'm not trying to punish newer teams if they recently took over a team and made some mistakes by keeping to many prospects I don't mind giving them the opportunity one time to make some drops and free up space but I'm not in favor of changing the rules going forward

I hadn't read Jay's comments before I posted before. I understand his point the only issue I see is that by dropping players during the draft your affecting the player pool while the draft is happening. It's the same reason why you can't drop players to free up salary during free agency.

I voted yes because it seems a little strict and the more teams that are fully involved in the draft, the better. But happy to go with the flow as ever.
I think Steve's suggestion is sensible and whichever wins, it's right to give the owners who are new to DD1 a mulligan. I think we did the same last year for the then new owners?

I think Scott sent out an email to every owner regarding the following deadlines:
DECEMBER 15 2. Deadline to promote players who are no longer minor league eligible to the 40 man roster 3. Deadline to promote players who were outrighted the previous year back to the 40 man roster 4. Deadline to release minor league players
JANUARY 5 5. Deadline to exercise club options 6. First year player draft, slow draft begins. We'll plan on 12 rounds again just like we did last year. You'll only be allowed to pick as many players as you have Minors spots open for - maximum of 60. 7. Deadline to designate Restricted Free Agents and declare Franchise and Prospect Tags:
JANUARY 19 8. Deadline to release players before free agency
-I think any adjustments should be voted on after this season. Just my two cents.
