Reasoning on my side is to add some power that is lacking from my lineup. I have oodles of Cap space to take on the 49M for 2017 and the contract gets much more manageable after that.  I see Upton as a know what you are getting type of player. you are going to get 25+ HR and he will flirt with double digit SB.  He struggled out of the gate last year but turned it on at the end. He is still only 29 and think he will be productive throughout the length of his deal. I also get rid of Hunter Pence as some of you may know I really have a dislike for.

Adding a top 100 prospect in Bickford really sealed the deal for me. I am always looking to add some depth to my farm system.

I'm disappointed this deal was needed but it was. I purposely front loaded Upton's contract assuming my timeline to compete was still a year away. Since my timeline has been moved up I needed to free up cap space and this deal saves me 27M this year alone. The drop in production from Upton to Pence is easier to take having acquired McCutchen in a separate deal.
