STL sends
Miguel Cabrera DET- 17:15M 18:15M 19: 15M
Philly Sends
Logan Forsythe-TB Joe Musgrove- HOU 17:500k 18:500k 19:500k 20:500k Anderson Espinoza-SD Josh Hader- MIL
I did this deal to get younger and the addition of Musgrove was key since he's an affordable pitcher who I am very high on and I think he could have a very bright future. Espinoza and Hader are in the deal to give me two more young assets who I believe will turn into quality big league pitchers and if they do that can give me three key pieces for my pitching staff. Losing Miggy isn't ideal but I'm a big fan of the players involved and I also shed about 15 million in salary which helps account for the salary that I took on in my Dozier deal.

Agreed. I am looking to make a title run in the next 2 years. My offense was surely lacking this year and needed a boost. Miggy fits that role at a reasonable price for the next 3 years. Giving up young talent is always tough, but my time is now to make my push. I hope this works out for both teams.

Looking back at this deal. Did both teams realize that Logan Forsythe is a free agent going into 2017? That was not made clear in the details of this trade AND he wasn't mentioned in either team's comments/reasoning and should have been. The only way St. Louis is able to retain Forsythe is with a Franchise Tag or an RFA tag to give him the rights to match the high FA offer.

This was clearly mentioned in the trade on my end.

Doesn't Philly have to do the FT or RFA before the trade? Can't trade an impending free agent for someone else to tag...

You can't trade someone and then have new owner Franchise Tag that player. Philly would have to use his Franchise Tag on Forsythe and then trade him to St. Louis for that to happen.
It is ok to trade a free agent and the new owner IS allowed to place a Restricted Free Agent tag on him. Henry, I think you traded me a FA Gardner and I had to use an RFA on him, didn't you?
So the only way STL will be able to retain Forsythe at this point is to use one of his 2 RFA tags which will only give him the right to match the high free agent offer Forsythe receives.

Hi Scott, with Gardner I had RFAd him and traded him with the tag. I think the rule for RFAs mirrors FTs, it has to be done by the team that has the player at the end of last season.
I wouldn't mind Philly doing this retrospectively and using an RFA on Forsythia before trading to STL, but I don't think it is right for STL to be able to use either RFA tag or FT on Forsythe

If I do the tag retrospectively and make the trade, do I still have 2 RFA tags to use on other players ?

Historically, we have done that players can be traded and then RFA'd by their new team.

1. RFA is different from Franchise Tag. You are allowed to trade a free agent if the acquiring team wants to RFA him. Or some teams have RFA'd and then traded (like Henry's trying to get me to trade the rights to Dee Gordon as I type this).
2. Chuck, if you do use an RFA on Forsythe and then trade him, NO. You don't get 2 other RFA tags. You only get 2 total per year and that would be one of them.

So I am OK with trading Forsythe, then ST Louis/A's can tag him.
