The non-tender deadline was on Jan. 5

This raises a question. When I cut Eury Perez earlier, I figured that if you do not non-tender a player, you are offering them a new contract. This year is therefore the first year of a contract and so results in a 50%, not 25%, penalty. What is the ruling on this?

I tend to agree incidentally that it would be easier if the deadline to keep a player was the start of FA but as the rules stand, there was a deadline. And it's unfair to retrospectively change that given players made decisions weeks ago, and would have rather waited to see how the hot stove etc played out.
Technically given the deadline has passed, the option has been taken up and it's no longer an option, it is now a contract. Hence the question... And I think as the rules stand, it's the first and only year of a new contract so it should technically be 50%.
I don't have an axe to grind, I'm just looking for clarification.

Yeah I guess you're right. What about a player who is under team control and on minimum salary, like Eury Perez? Is that 25% too. In real life, aren't players just given 1y contracts each year?

My understanding of this is that post-non-tender deadline, these guys are owed 25% for this year and then nothing in subsequent years. That applies to guys in their 500K years as well as those in their 1/2/3 years or 3.8/4.8/5.8 (or whatever) years. If they are non-tendered before the deadline, there is no cost.
I agree with Henry that in the future, it probably makes sense for the non-tender deadline to be closer to the player release deadline (or the same). But I also agree that it is too late to do that retroactively for this year.
I'll wait for Scott's final work on the 25%.

Great; sounds like I was making things unnecessarily complicated there... Good luck everyone in FA! By the way Steve, 25% of 2m is 500k not 400k. Could make all the difference

Gentlemen, problem here is that we don't technically have a "non-tender" deadline in our league rules (Andrew called it the deadline to exercise options, but I think that could be construed as something different). Plus we have several "deadlines" that have unfortunately had to be fluid based on the activity levels in the league.
I've long considered and thought there was no financial penalty for releasing any rookie contract, Pre-Arb, or Arb player contract as long as it's during the offseason and prior to Free Agency. This is the communication I've given to Steve, plus all owners in DD2 and DD3.

Scott, this is what we did last year. Here's an email you sent to the league at the pre-draft deadline:
Hey guys, Deadline on all these things is tomorrow (January 5). Please post on the board if you haven't done so already. We are set to begin our Minors/1st Year Player Draft tomorrow night. I will be creating all of the Round threads tonight.
I have player promotions, releases, non-tenders, etc. from the following: · Boston Padres · St. Louis A's · Chicago Blue Jays · Philadelphia Astros · NY Diamondbacks · Texas Giants · Cincinnati Twins · Seattle Braves · Detroit Brewers · KC Marlins · Cleveland Nationals · Pittsburgh Orioles
I need player promotions (from Minors, or those who were outrighted last year), releases, non-tenders, etc from the following teams ASAP please. · Colorado Rays · LA Mets · Chicago Dodgers I also need Franchise and/or Restricted Tags from the following teams ASAP. · St. Louis A's · Chicago Blue Jays · NY Diamondbacks · KC Marlins · Colorado Rays · LA Mets · Chicago Dodgers

Thanks Andrew. Yes that communication from before Minors draft is because nobody's allowed to do so during the draft. But owners are still allowed to release players after the Minors draft too, and I've always assumed non-tenders were allowed then as well.
If I'm in the wrong here then the league needs to let me know ASAP. I am not holding 25% or 50% penalties to these players right now. It's so time consuming and tough to track as it is with cap hits on Fantrax. (that I still need to enter!)
