Nats send:
Dellin Betances 15: $0.5M
Steven Wright (prospect)
Padres send:
Cole Tucker (prospect)
Forrest Wall (prospect)
2016 12th rounder
Cleveland reasoning:
Whilst concerned about giving up (possibly) the top reliever in the game during a championship push (to a counterparty who can overtake me in three pitching categories!), this deal does make some sense for me, even though it is risky.
Because of real-life trades, I have Storen, Clippard, Capps and Shaw all as set-up men, so while losing Betances will impact my ratios and lose me Ks, I hopefully have enough depth to mitigate the loss a little. A fair part of Betances' value right now also comes from his ability to be RFAd or FTd. RFAs seem to end up cheaper than regular FAs (partly because of the restrictions on contracts), so the option has value. Unfortunately, without doing a trade, I can't harness that value because I am planning on FTing Blackmon and RFAing Gardner and Kershaw (the latter bidding should be interesting). Tucker and Wall are both decent prospects (former back end first rounders) who haven't made their marks as yet (Wall also has a big question mark over his arm because of shoulder surgery, and currently has an injured shoulder again) but they are top-200 types with decent upside. All in all, I decided to take the risk this year. I expect to be mocked in a major way if my ratios fall, Scott overtakes me in Holds, ERA and WHIP and that makes the difference in losing me the title!! At the very least it makes things interesting.
PS [Wright was thrown for Sox-minded fun, and a 12th rounder can't hurt for topping up the minors roster coming into 2016]
