I sent Scott a message yesterday with a question he suggested the league discuss, so here goes:
This past weekend Red Sox pitcher Ryan Dempster announced he would not pitch in 2014, citing health concerns and a desire to spend more time with his family. He's not officially "retiring," but he apparently will not be available for 2014. Red Sox GM Ben Cherington said the club expects to place Dempster on the restricted list sometime this spring to free up a spot on the 40-man roster and Dempster will forfeit the $13.25 million due him this season by informing the club he will not fulfill the last year of his contract.
Naturally, I have Dempster on my KC Marlins roster for this season, so I asked Scott how this will play out. If the guy had officially retired or signed overseas this wouldn't be an issue; I'd be off the hook for any salary commitment. But leaving at least a partially open door for returning at some point raises a unique issue for my 2014 roster. He's only signed for the upcoming season, but I'm currently responsible for a substantial amount of salary in addition to a valuable roster spot that would obviously be better served by an active player.
So here's where you guys chime in: should the KC Marlins roster remain unchanged or should Dempster be released outright with no salary implications? As far as I'm concerned, the news of this announcement is equivalent to his retirement, as he is only signed for 2014. If he comes back at some point this season, put me on the hook for 25% of the $13.25 million. That's better than competing all season with a 39-man roster. Any salary cap overage will be addressed at that time. However, in the interest of fairness and parity the league is invited to share its' thoughts. With Free Agency currently underway a consensus is important for roster and salary planning purposes.
Thanks in advance for your input.
