Hey all. With our keeper deadline coming up this Sunday night, and with Shaun Marcum just signing with the Mets in the last day, this situation arose and I wanted to put my thoughts out there. I believe they're all valid and fit within our rules.
Jake B (Angels/Mets) asked me if he'd be able to keep Marcum since he just signed but our deadline isn't until Sunday. So I figured in this type of situation there could be 4 scenarios...
1. Before keeper deadline, player resigns w/same team. If Marcum resigned with MIL, then MIL owner gets to keep if he wants. 2. Before keeper deadline, player signs with another team (he did), and NYM gets option to keep Marcum. 3. Post keeper deadline (this would be next week in our case), player resigns with same team. MIL owner still gets option to keep Marcum had he not resigned until next week, but ONLY this year. May have to adjust roster/keepers. 4. Post keeper deadline, player signs with new team. Nobody gets to keep. He goes in FA bidding draft. This could be Bourn or any other guy who's out there not signed yet.
Am I making sense? Marcum falls in scenario #2 above, but after Sunday night all we get are scenarios #3 and #4.

2 is not true - at least I don't think so. Marcum is an FA in our league - nobody other than the brewers owner would have dibs

We did say the teams were locked after we picked our second franchise, but I'm OK with giving the owner the option to keep a player that signs with one of his teams until Sunday night. After that I think all teams and keepers should be locked, unless the FA signs with the same team.

I agree with 1,2,4. If the player doesn't sign by the keeper deadline, then he is a FA

I agree with 1,3,4 and this was discussed before hand.
Marcum is a free agent since he didn't resign with MIL.

any outcome here as Jair Jurrjens just signed with Balt and I would like to keep him if I can.

after reading this again, I think only 1 and 4 apply. We said we would allow the Braves to keep Michael Bourn as long as he resigned before the keeper deadline. I believe we also said that once the keeper deadline was passed and free agency started, we wouldn't pull anyone from free agency to anyone's team

I agree with Andrew now. We agreed to allow FA who signed with the SAME team after the roster lock to be kept....but after the keeper deadline I think only #4 applies.

I disagree in the fact that the keepers haven't been set yet so why should they go to FA if the rosters are not frozen yet since keepers are not set. I feel that we should be able to keep a player who signs with a new team as long as the rosters are not frozen yet.

Guys, this should be simple.
Yes, our franchise rosters locked after we selected. That means Upton is still a Diamondback in our league - regardless of how much Taylor wants him. Too bad. Rules is rules.
But for real MLB free agents that are coming to agreements this week, having no bearing on the franchises we selected since they were free agents, AND with our keeper deadline not having come yet (it's Sunday night) - Marcum should be able to go to NYM owner (if so desired) and Jurrjens should be able to go to Baltimore owner (if so desired). ONLY THIS WEEK. Any free agents signing after our keeper deadline will be Diamond Duos free agents and up for grabs to everyone.

Don't worry Scott, Ill find a way to get him one way or the other...It is your fault he's not on my team though.
I'm cool with whatever you want to do. I don't think one player here or there will make a difference, and if you think those rules fit with the spirit of what your trying to accomplish with this league....Then it sounds good to me.

Totally disagree. We really need to limit the amount of moving targets we have in this league while we are still finalizing rules.
Marcum et al are free agents, as per the the rules in the constitution - if trades (like upton) are locked, it makes no sense why free agency wouldn't be locked (with the Ortiz caveat in the constitution).

Let me start by saying I'll play it however everyone wants to play it, but I totally disagree Scott and here's why.... If your premise is that Marcum can be kept by NYM because our keepers haven't lock then that's fine, but then ATL get's Upton. Why because one is a trade and one is a free agent?? Doesn't matter either we allow player movement after we selected franchises but before keeper selections or we don't. Can't have it both ways. The fair way to do it is how most of us understood it. If they were a FA when we selected our teams unless they re sign wih the team they played with last year they remain a FA. That's just how I see it, but again I'm not going to about it. I'm sure they'll be much worse stuff to get pissed about later on BTW Scott the logo is phenomenal!

I agree with Steve and Ben. I'm fine which ever way this shakes out but we need something consistent

Yep, I know. My logo is awesome! I'll be taking orders if anyone else wants one.
I appreciate all the banter this issue has drummed up. Let's keep it simple then and say all these guys from this week are free agents in our league. Rosters locked after franchise selection, so I see where you're all coming from. Thanks for helping me see the light.
Sorry Jake Mets, if you want Marcum, be the high bidder. Same with Jimmy Orioles. Go get Jurrjens in the bidding draft.
