Colorado Devil Rays trade: Yadier Alvarez, SP (LAD) - Prospect 2017 MILB Draft 11th Round (Pick 11.9) 2017 MILB Draft 12th Round (Pick 12.9) to the Cleveland Nationals for: Derek Hill, OF (DET) - Prospect Chris Paddack, SP (SDP) - Prospect Sam Coonrod, RP (SFG) - Prospect
Devil Rays logic: This trade is one that is accomplished from a position of strength to a position of need. I have several good starting pitching prospects, but very few OF prospects and even less prospects overall with game changing speed. Hill fits both. I am very high on Alvarez and have no doubt that he will be a game changer, but if Paddack can come back healthy in 2018 and Coonrod continues to have a solid, albeit unspectacular, rise, then this trade will have done what I needed it to do. Great working with Henry, as always!

Agreed
Turns out I was right thinking my 2016 trading was done, but only just! This one is just a case of me liking Alvarez. Brandon had said he was interested in Hill, and so it was up to him to say what he felt filled the remaining gap. Nice call on Paddack, 15:1 K:BB in A ball last year was very impressive, and obviously some patience is needed in his recovery but upside is king in and he certainly has that. Great chats with Brandon and a happy new year to all!
