Orioles Give up:
Nelson Cruz (SEA) 17:$13, 18:$14
Gerrit Cole (PIT) 17:0.5M

for:

Anderson Espinoza (prospect)
Dominic Smith (prospect)
Josh Hader (prospect)
Richard Urena (prospect)
1st Round Pick (5th Overall)

O's Reasoning for this trade is to get younger and build depth in the system. I get 3 top 100 prospects for a year of Cole and 2 of Cruz.

Neither player was part of my future; Cole was unfortunately on the roster in the inaugural season and does not qualify for a prospect tag. And while Im taking a risk here this also opens up my roster flexibility next year not having to use a franchise tag on a player I would definitely have some doubts about.

while I will miss the 40HR by Cruz the O's are clearly in a full team rebuild.

I confirm. I'm all in this season and this is a perfect way to upgrade my roster. It hurts losing these young prospects ultimately it was the price I had to pay to be able to add both Cole and Cruz. I'm a little bit concerned about Cole and his injury but he's a cheap option and Cruz is fairly cheap too for a player who will hit 40 bombs a year.

Scott can correct me if I am wrong, but I am fairly certain that Cole would be eligible for a prospect tag. He did not have any sort of arb years on his initial contract which means that after his initial 4 years, he should be eligible for a prospect tag.

I just looked Cole up in Fantrax amd he was promoted to the Majors in 2013. His "0" dollar contact was in 2013.

In discussion the A's have offered to give up Richard Urena(prospect) in the deal as well. A's to confirm.
